Excursion  A geological city walk
A city walk in the historical heart of Lille, looking for traces of the geological history of Northern France. Diverse stones have been used to build major monuments and houses. Lille only appears in history during the 11th Century. At that time, it was a quite small walled city on an island of the Deûle River. The city gradually increased in size thanks to swamps drainage and to the channelization of the river. It is therefore its favourable hydrogeological situation that explains the location of the heart of the city. Nevertheless, construction stones had to be brought from places surrounding Lille, sometimes quite far away. Due to its location at the border of many kingdoms, Lille will then encounter a tumultuous destiny under very diverse influences during its history.

Duration: 2 - 3 hours
Means of transport: on foot

Excursion  Murals from the ancient Geological Institute
The object of the visit consists in a discovery of large-scale murals illustrating the geological structure of Northern France, Ardennes and Boulonnais regions. These murals represent five geologic maps. The Academy of Lille up to 1968 owns 5 Departments: Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Aisne and Ardennes. The first three departments are displayed on a very large map (10.40 x 4.50 m), while the two others are displayed on specific maps at the first floor. The ground-floor wall is nicely decorated by a map of the Paleozoic Massif from the Ardenne.       Duration: 1h30
