Excursion  Looking for a river facing urban pressure
Pedestrian field-trip discussing how planning managers and geologic-information owners can coordinate over a territory facing urban growing. Starting from the site of Bouvines (Battle in 1214) we discover the cluse of La Marque River and walk 8 km upstream along the river banks to the city of Lesquin. Geological conditions explain why the central part of the major bed is dry. The first consequence is that the presence of the river disappeared from the inhabitants’ eyes from at least one century. Management problems are accumulating leading to increasing problems and damages. Their treatments only led to new damages. Interestingly archaeological discoveries indicate that Man has been occupying this area from about 1500 years.

This field trip, mostly presented in French, welcomes foreigners for whom special attention will be observed.

Excursion  Normandy Chalk: sedimentology, geometries, faulting and reservoir properties
During this field trip famous Normandy cliff sites will be visited, three major aspects on chalk will be addressed:
1) Sedimentology and 3D geometries of chalk. Outcrop, photogrammetry, and VHR marine seismic data approaches.
2) Chalk petrophysical properties and heterogeneities.
3) Kinematics and geometry of major tectonic accidents (Land-Sea coupled approach) and chalk fracturing.

Excursion  The Boulonnais: An open school for North-Sea geologists

Palaeozoic and Mesozoic basins outcropping in the Boulonnais thanks to quarries and sea cliffs will be re-visited using new discoveries in the field of tectonic/sedimentation relationships, paleogeography and diagenetic evolution of Upper-Jurassic source rocks. The excursion is co-leaded by TNO (the former Dutch Geological Survey) and the University of Lille. It will be focussed on tectonostratigraphic aspects of the Jurassic cliffs outcropping along the English Channel (Boulonnais) and its major role as an analogue for the Dutch offshore syn-rift Jurassic deposits. Exceptionally, a quarry will be visited to observe the Palaeozoic reefs and the coal measures of the Boulonnais.

Excursion  Spectacular outcrops from the Devonian to Dinantian in Ardennes: from the field to the model

The excursion focuses on the analyse, and the interpretation of the carbonated Devonian and Dinantian of Wallonia. The Givetian (Han-sur-Lesse) allows following a modern approach of the barred shelf and its evolution under eustatic constraints. The Frasnian (Couvin and Philippeville region) displays mud mounds among the most spectacular in the world with an extraordinary diversity of reef communities. The Dinantian (in the Meuse valley) offers an incredible diversity of carbonate facies from ramp and shelf environments.
